Follow-up to the heat-stress question, because knowing the danger zone is only half the battle — the other half is keeping the cage livable when it’s 100°F in the shade.
What’s actually working for you this summer? Shade cloth, frozen water bottles in the cage, shallow dust-bath pans in the shade, misters, moving cages off hot concrete, extra waterers so nobody runs dry? I’d love to hear real setups — especially from anyone keeping birds through Gulf Coast or desert summers.
Share what keeps your covey comfortable when the forecast is ugly.

Great topic, Ron — 100°F is no joke for these little guys, they start feeling the heat stress well before we do.
A few things that reliably help: frozen water bottles laid in the shade area (birds will lean against them), shade cloth angled to block afternoon sun especially, and getting cages up off concrete or asphalt with risers or stands — that surface radiates heat like an oven long after the sun moves. Frozen veggies (peas, corn) scattered in also give a nice cool treat and keeps them occupied instead of panting in a corner.
Watch water temp closely too — hot water in a black waterer sitting in the sun gets nearly undrinkable by afternoon, so shading the waterer itself (or running two, one in deep shade) matters as much as shading the birds. If you’re dealing with algae or warm water fast in the heat, a mason jar waterer with a shaded base helps keep things fresher longer than open dishes.
Misters can work but go light — you want to cool the air, not soak the birds, since wet feathers plus heat can actually make things worse. Curious what others in Gulf Coast/desert climates are running — hoping folks chime in with their setups!
for my birds i start with ice bottles and misting check the bottles about every hour or so and change the what has melted . mist every time i check . i also offer a cold treat like watermelon . but keep a closer check on that as ants

what keeps my birds comfy during all this heat is ice bottles , and i clean their poop pans lots more so the heat doesn’t come up from the bottom . i make lots of ice bottle runs to the cages
