For Coturnix (17-18 day incubation), the general targets are:
- Days 1-14 (or 1-15): 40-50% relative humidity. Aim for the middle of that (around 45%) rather than chasing an exact number. This period is about controlled moisture loss from the egg — you want the air cell growing at a steady, predictable rate.
- Lockdown (last 3 days, ~day 15-18): bump up to 65-75% humidity. This keeps the membranes from shrink-wrapping the chick as it works to hatch.
As for drift — a few points here and there during incubation days won’t sink you. Coturnix eggs are pretty forgiving compared to something like waterfowl. What matters more is the trend over the whole run: if you’re consistently too dry, chicks can get stuck to the shell (dehydrated membranes); consistently too wet, and you get chicks that drown in the shell or have huge weak bellies from too little fluid loss. If you’ve got a hygrometer, check that it’s calibrated (salt test is the easy DIY way) — a lot of “humidity problems” are actually bad sensor readings.
One trick some folks use to judge if their average is on track: candle and track air cell size around day 7 and day 14. If the air cell is too small, you’re running too humid overall; too big, too dry.
