For fertile eggs, a common Coturnix ratio is 1 male to 3–5 females.
- Too many males → fighting, over-mating, and hens with bare backs/heads and scratches. If you see that, pull males.
- Colony vs. pairs: colony breeding (one male + several hens) is easiest and fine for mixed-line eggs. Use individual pairs/trios when you need to know exactly who the parents are (color projects or pedigree).
